To none of our surprise here at Level Down Games, Sony will be skipping E3 once again this year, just as it did last year. In a statement to gamesindustry.biz, Sony said: “it does not feel the vision for the event is right for what it has planned for this year.” Sony will instead be attending “hundreds” of consumer events to display upcoming games for both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
After thorough evaluation SIE has decided not to participate in E3 2020. We have great respect for the ESA as an organization, but we do not feel the vision of E3 2020 is the right venue for what we are focused on this year.
We will build upon our global events strategy in 2020 by participating in hundreds of consumer events across the globe. Our focus is on making sure fans feel part of the PlayStation family and have access to play their favorite content. We have a fantastic line up of titles coming to PlayStation 4, and with the upcoming launch of PlayStation 5, we are truly looking forward to a year of celebration with our fans.
This was a move that was almost expected this year as certain companies such as Sony and EA have been moving more and more away from E3. Sony and EA would like to see E3 become a fan celebration of games, while other companies want the show to remain focused on the industry and members of the press.
The ESA has been steadily trying to appease both sides of the coin but has so far had limited success in doing so.
We’ll have more on Sony’s plans for 2020, including the PlayStation 5 Reveal Event, which should be just around the corner!
